Visiting Vienna has been on my list for a while and after successfully cycling from Passau to Vienna, I finally made it, and I had only 24 hours to see the hotspots. I think I’ve seen the best parts. Here, I share my favorite spots and tell how to do it yourself.
The city is characterised by unique architecture from Baroque times and numerous museums. What I really like about Vienna is that most of the significant sites are in the inner city circle. I totally recommend to just go and wander around to discover the city for about 3-4 hours. Separate the time into morning, lunch, city discovery, break and late afternoon/evening:
MAKE 24 HOURS COUNT IN VIENNA
In the morning
Visit Schloß Belvedere early because afterward it gets crowded.
Lunch at Naschmarkt
The Naschmarkt is a market where they sell fruits, vegetables and all the other things you seek at a city market. It’s really nice to wander around and it’s a nice spot where the locals meet friends to eat something. I recommend the deli Naschmarkt.
Really delicious lunch places according to the locals
- Nguyens Pho House (Vietnamese)
- Miznon (Israeli Food)
5 must visit destinations in Vienna
A potential start for the Vienna discovery by foot or even by bike could be the public transportation stops: Stadtpark or Vienna Mitte. Places to see:
- Vienna Opera
- Austrian National library (Photo taken from Albertina)
- Heldenplatz
- Volkstheater
- University Vienna Library (perhaps you need to have access through a student – I was lucky that I met my friend, Betül, who is studying there; otherwise I would have never found out about it).
Isn’t it honestly like in Harry Potter ?
Break after lunch at Badeschiff
The Badeschiff is a floating pool on the Donau river and actually really nice on a hot and sunny summer day to get refreshed by jumping into the pool. Cost: 4 euro
FYI anytime: Where the Vienna locals gather and hang out
For the true local experience with little shops, bars, cafes and restaurants, I recommend the streets Burggasse, Westbahnstrasse, Neubaugasse, Zieglergasse and all the other little alleys within those neighborhoods.
Late afternoon / evening
After relaxing at the Badeschiff, it’s fairly easy to wander to the Stephandsom and then around the corner to Figlmüller, where you can eat the best wiener schnitzel in town. This is a must do and I would never leave Vienna without having eaten a giant schnitzel ha ha. The sunset near the Badeschiff by the Donau is really nice and also very local to sit along the river. P.S. Don’t forget to bring a drink!
I TRAVEL FOREVER’s VIEW & RECOMMENDATION
I really enjoyed Vienna and I think I made the 24 hours there worthwhile, so I wanted to share the best places I visited so you, too, can have an incredible time traveling to this city.
