FIRST TIME EVER: SURFING IN BYRON BAY, AUSTRALIA:-
Coalan, my Irish friend – who I had just met – was heading to Byron Bay and asked me to join him in his car. It seemed really wrong for some reason being in that car…
Traveling from Brisbane to Byron Bay via Surfer’s Paradise
The reason why it felt so weird and funny at the same time was me sitting on the left side watching him driving on the wrong side (left) while sitting on the wrong side (right) haha. He was used to driving on that side of the road because in the UK it’s the same, whereas in Germany it’s just the other way around.
Which side to sit and drive is in your opinion the right one ?
We spent the day at the beach and continued our journey south to Byron Bay where we checked into a nice hostel called The Arts Factory, which I can actually recommend if you are ever planning on going to Byron Bay. It is a very hip hostel with standard rooms, tents, common kitchen, pool, hot jacuzzi, etc. Price is about AUD $30/night for a 2-bed dorm.
After checking in we went to the supermarket to get food and ‘Goon’. Locals saying about it is “Aborigines pillow”. This is because once you finished it all you can inflate it and may use it as a pillow. In general, alcohol is very expensive in Australia, especially spirits.
Oh my gosh, I could literally write a whole article just about Goon, a “delicacy” box wine, dry start and finishes off smooth. A must taste if you decide to go to Australia. Price: AUD $15 for an amazing 4 liters.
Don’t look at the ingredients!!! Milk, fish, eggs – okay that’s enough said. Back to the main story – yes it gets you very drunk and yes you have a bad hangover the next day. Everyone still does it!
The next day we hired some surfboards and without any training went to ride some “monster waves”. The waves were quite good to start learning and guess what I even managed to stand up!

When going to Byron Bay then a must go to a bar is called Cheeky Monkey, where you can find many other travelers and have a lot of fun. That night it was Coyote wet T-shirt contest…

If you bring more time and more money than me with you,
you should totally go and check out a place called ‘Nimbin’ –
it’s located about an hour by a bus tour and apparently, you fly very “high” there. Peace!
